  • Moving the MAF - 3B engine

    Hi,

I am building a UR Rally replica running a slightly modified 3B engine.

Can I move the MAF from before the turbo to after the turbo? Due to space constraints in the UR engine bay plus a decent sized charge cooler ( sat where the airbox used to be) it will be better for airflow and tidiness.

What sort of symptoms would this cause? Does the ECU require reprogramming?

Another thought is that could it just be mounted in the engine without being piped in? just reading ambient / engine bay air temps would that satisfy the ECU signal input?

    Hi Alan

Firstly the MAF (MASS AIR FLOW) can be repositioned to the boosted side of the intake system as long as you are not running massive boost, as to weather the ECU needs to be reprogammed or not i am unsure, i suspect it doesn't but there are people on this forum who are light years more experienced than myself, and they should be able to answer the ECU questions.

What you cannot do is just have the MAF sat in the engine bay. It must be plummed into the intake system, as it measures air flow Not ambient temperature. It is also important that after air has passed through the MAF that no other unmetered air can get into or escape the intake.

I have a 3B running 1.2bar and my MAF is on the pressure side. The intake pipe into the throttle body has been chopped about half way and the MAF sits angled away from the engine, close to the wastegate.

Mine was remapped after moving it from the stock position to the pressure side.

does it need remapping or was that done for a little more go.

        Who did the remap?

There were no other modifications at the same time. It didn't need a full remap (that had been done a month or so before), it just needed a bit of tweaking - I think because pressurised air temp and density no longer needs to be guessed. The mapping was done by Mark at Automark. Look here and go to post #50.

It's at quattronics at the moment, one of the items on the list is having pipework frabricated to replace as much silicone in that setup as possible. If you're quick, they could do two at the same time, although you might be going with a reverse inlet manifold? However, Corey's on holiday at the moment, so you'll have to wait until Monday.

my pipe work is different due to a charge cooler sat where your airbox is, but thanks for the tip off.

@ Dave - did the wiring loom from the air meter plug need to be modified, or is it possible to run with stock wiring lengths?

                  It needs lengthening.

I've mine on the pressure side:

Any pictures of your set up? I don't have mine running properly yet but mine will have to be remapped anyway due to the other bolt on's i've added.
